ITU UNIVERSITY CAMPUS 1ST PRIZE FAMAGUSTA, CYPRUS, IND [Inter.National.Design] in collaboration with ERGINOGLU & CALISLAR Architecture. Our main challenge for this project is to arrive to a proposal that could articulate not only an interesting and confortable life for the users of the campus, but to take this opportunity to improve the urban articulation of this site located in front of the famous city wall, near the frozen zone of the tourist strip of Varosha and next to a potentially dynamic avenue. The campus should serve in our opinion as a place of social and cultural encounter open to all citizens, in that sense it should be a campus of excellence qualities of public space and accessibility. Finally our last goal is be able to arrive to a formal scheme that can also integrate the dispersed and mixed presence of historic buildings and turning them from nuisances into assets of the university life.

- CEUTA SOCIAL HOUSING
-
VIVIENDA DE PATRON 1st PRIZE, CEUTA, SPAIN, UNDERCONSTRUCTION 2011 The international competition for Vanguard Social Housing (VIVA) in Ceuta, Spain ask for an innovative architectural and urban solution for 859 houses to be located at a beautiful site in Ceuta which has privilege views to the Mediterranean Sea, an exceptional case for social housing projects. Besides exploiting views the brief ask to come up with a scheme that solve the opposition between a new colossal hospital in the centre of the area and a typical self made Mediterranean favela (mostly inhabited by Moroccan immigrants) located a few meters from the site. The high-density requirements of the plot combined with height restrictions also ask for an integral solution to all aspects at once. Our proposal ‘Vivienda de patron’ (Pattern housing and Housing for the boss) aims to absorb all the context situations and transform them all into advantages, so the different scales and intimacy of the neighbour favela were reinterpreted in a simplified and systematic version, the views to the sea were also maximized by achieving cross views from many angles of the scheme.

MEXICAN PAVILLION, SHANGHAI, CHINA, 2009 Shanghai Expo 2010 Competition In Collaboration with Hugo Sánchez (Taller Entorno) IND proposal for the flag of Mexico is a search for how to integrate three emergencies at a temporary building by means of a clear formal gesture. The flag is not about creating another volume in the Expo, but rather tries to express the lack of it. The project is the negative of a volume formed by two surfaces, ie the vacuum created by the apparent union between an artificial hill for public access and a series of micro umbrella. Together these two elements form a light cover surfaces for photo voltaic cells. The Promenade, a garden where there is shelter walkers from the expo as well as the visitor's pavilion. This space is made up of a garden column, which together with the structural columns to create a perception like a nursery, where a list of plants from different parts of the country took part in the exhibition hall. The gardens are columnar cylindrical structures are sufficient to permit the development of epiphytes, hanging ferns, gross and other natural conditions that require very little land for development and reproduction. The interior floor of the pavilion is left open through a modular space. The sample of the exhibit is based on a multi-column system. The column also functions as a key part of the structure also serves as an element of the exhibit, which functions as a lamp, in addition to being proposed to accommodate a system of shutters and screens, finally, as a basis for state objects.

- CEUTA ATHLETIC FIELD
-
ATHLETIC FIELD, CEUTA,SPAIN 2008 The project challenges in a significant extent, adapting a running track dimensions pre-set rules for a sports site and irregularly marked territory. Peripheral sidewalk. The project has diluted form of the rigid track through a peripheral surface that moulds to the shape of the terrain and its topography. This amorphous ring plays the most important part of the landscape since it becomes the principal mediator of the track with both in form and tours. The ring also contains two surface of mediating circuits to fulfil the different purposes of the pedestrian. The outer ring that is moulded to the terrain also links the existing sidewalks surrounding while inviting walkers to enjoy their journey, as you would pass on a sidewalk that leads to a park. The inner ring plays a role in the innermost track and serves to cover the track and even available for ‘jogging’ as well as invites pedestrians informally to see or view the landscape quietly. Enviromental excavation The elevation of the track largely determines the runway that effect less on environment and add an important parameter for the decreasing of the costs. The locker room facilities, gymnasium and administrative are all linked under an open porch addition to the main entrance you can also become an attractive place for tea or play chess or domino.

- VENICE MOSQUE
-
FLOATING MOSQUE IN VENICE, ITALY, 2009 Pavillion for Venice Biennale 2010 The intense public discourse going on to this very topic meant finding an understanding of the complex constellation between art, culture and architecture. The heritage of Venetian architecture is a heritage of Islamic architecture. This encouraged the development of the initial idea and shaped the floating mosque as a intercultural gathering point, making a new world within the compounds of Venice. The process of transformation of places like Venice today has the ability to underline the emblematic changes ongoing in the European society. Based on the classical tradition of mosques, with a courtyard, the patio, and the dome shaped structure on a square foot print and the minaret, being the classical elements, the project needed a contemporary transformation to underline the paradigm change. In the context cultural installation made of balls, gym balls, which are easily available on the market, that will be distributed to the residents of Venice after the venue, in the sense that every body is part of this installation. The reuse of the balls, by distributing them to the people responds to the sustainable aspect of this installation.

- VENLO BRIDGE DESIGN
-
BRIDGE DESIGN, VENLO, THE NETHERLANDS, 2007 Span: 65m IND bridge proposal for Venlo does not create an iconic shape but intends to create a formal pattern that blends more easily with the rhythm of the city skyline behind it and also reflect on the proximity of the water. A bridge can become an autonomous element that connects two points without considering the difference that lies between them. In the case of Venlo we are faced with a situation which could be approach differently: the bridge we believe will not perform only as connector of two points but it will also serve as mediator between the city and the new park proposed on the other side of the bank. In this sense the bridge could be read as an invitation to the citizens to extend their recreational activities to the other side of the water or as an extension of the park to the city. We propose to have a bridge that is both comfortable and inviting. This is intended to be synchrony with its structural performance. Therefore the geometry of the bridge is the result of the merging of a flat line with two symmetrical curvilinear profiles at each side. It starts with a semi close space that is followed by openings that are follow by a more close space and the invert sequence after.

- SALTILLO PRIVATE HOUSING
-
MIGUEL ANGEL RESIDENCE, SALTILLO, MEXICO, 2008 3 Phase house scheme 120m2+120m2+120m2 (1st Phase under construction) A young couple, (lawyers) ask IND to design a house with a tight budget in a beautiful site. After discussing the space limits and limited resources implied for each space it was collectively decided to be optimized for the `barrio` house growth modus operandi. The proposed design then is developed at least in three clearly planned steps: 1st phase includes living, kitchen and a temporary master bedroom. The second phase is a horizontal expansion that includes a room for the expected first child, an area of studio and a formal dining room. The third phase grows upwards including 3 rooms, a TV area and a garden terrace. The house can later expand even further to include a covered garage and a pool. The challenge of the design was to conceive a scheme that allows each phase to integrate effortlessly aesthetic and constructive wise.

- UTRECHT SOCIAL HOUSING
-
MASTER PLAN, HOUSING, UTRECHT OVERVECHT, THE NETHERLANDS, 2007 300 houses Total construction above ground: 36,000m2 Client: Blauwhoed Eurowoningen The area of Overvecht has been listed as one of the priority areas of urban improvement by the National government of The Netherlands. Overvecht was a typically optimistic development of the 60`s that did not adapt very well to the emerging new demands of the now mostly foreign population. The slabs and its openness are being put into scrutiny and in most cases (like our site) demolished. In our proposal we decided to incorporate some of the essences of the 60`s planning such as greenness and open public spaces shaped by open form blocks yet we made them in a much intimate and subtle manner. The monotonous scale of the slabs is exchanged for a variety of heights that increase the diversity of the living styles. Ground housing with a front-back garden has been also contested as we propose to use an underused urban typology of back to back houses with front and back gardens in both sides of the scheme. Finally we put forward the idea of a new street that divides the site in two increasing the domestic aspect of the development.

- AMSTERDAM OFFICE BUILDING
-
UJALA RADIO STATION, OFFICE BUILDING, AMSTERDAM, 2007 Total construction: 1500m2 Client: Ujala B.V The recently invigorated area of Bijlmermeer in Amsterdam is turning to an excitement immigrant base community of Amsterdam. There are plenty of foreigners in Holland and one distinguished group is that of Indian speaking decent that includes plenty of Surinamese people. Ujala Radio is a key example of how this emerging language base community displays its cultural symbols in the city. The site for Ujala Radio Station is located at an important crossing of Bijlmedreef and close to the hexagonal housing slabs of the 60`s. The proposed building capitalizes in its corner position and orientates each level of office space towards one direction. The volume of each floor shifts at every level in a spontaneous gesture creating terraces for social interaction and increasing the dynamic aspect of the building.

- ALMANZORA SOCIAL HOUSING
-
SOCIAL HOUSING, COMPETITION, ALMANZORA, SPAIN, 2007 with Arkizon, Emin Balkis Competition (finalist) 44 houses. 5 types Area: 3240m2 (Above ground) Our proposal aims at arriving to a solution that solves everything at once: the urban challenges of high density and context in an Andalusian neighborhood with a constructive modular system that allows a variety of living formats in an inexpensive way. The spatial module used is 3 x 5 x 3 allows almost impossible combinations in several modes that together make an urban ensemble like a 3d puzzle. The way the ensemble faces the street is an open system of branches that provide porosity and merge public and collective space seamlessly.

- ASTANA ROTTERDAM BIENNALE

CAPITAL VS CAPITAL PROJECT FROM IND FOR ASTANA KAZAKHSTAN, EXHIBITION IN KUNSTHAL ROTTERDAM, 3rd International Architecture Biennale 2007 Curator: Berlage Institute, Pier Vittorio Aureli Astana new capital is putting architecture to the ultimate test by investing billions of dollars in an attempt to create a new identity for Kazahkstan. The idea is to combine the successful architecture monumentality of Brasilia with the synergy that can provide a city the sources of apparently endless cash derived from oil. A cynical could claim that Astana is a sort of beach less Dubai with temperatures varying from –40 celsius in the long winter to +40 in the summer, yet that is perhaps not far from true. IND documented the overlap of recent multiple master plans drawn in a rush that included metabolist Kurokawa’s winning scheme and Bin Laden Group among many others and observed the surprising vitality of the Soviet quarters. The focus of the master plans went again for the monumental axis discarding any attention for the Soviet dominated city of the previous era. IND proposes to capitalize on Astana’s undervalued Soviet urban tissue with a great scale intervention of 1001 domes roof that interiorise public space between the slabs in the north bank of the capital.

- WHO
-
InterNationalDesign [IND] is an architecture office founded in 2007 with its base in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The name reflects on the background difference of its founding partners Arman Akdogan (Turkey) and Felix Madrazo (Mexico) living in The Netherlands. It deploys a fusion of cultural influences that combine at least European, Latin American and Eastern references with first and third world knowledge. IND is still in its phase of definition and currently has focused its interest mainly in architecture and urban design projects, simultaneously it has also engaged in research of urbanism and politics with the project Capital vs Capital in Astana, Kazakhstan, a project recently shown in the Kunsthal, Rotterdam. IND started winning in Spain the first competition the office submitted a project for and its about to get its first building approval in Holland for a Radio Station in Amsterdam. IND also plays as a branch partner of the think tank Supersudaca.
